Sell your MacBook

Sell your MacBook

We consider MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models that work and ones that have faults, as long as they are complete. Tell us about any repairs or replaced parts, including official Apple repairs, and we will assess them individually. Tell us which MacBook you have and how it is behaving, add a few photos, and we will let you know by email whether we can make an offer.

What to tell us about your MacBook

You do not need to know everything. “I don’t know” is a fine answer in the form, and the photos fill in a lot of gaps.

The exact model and year

On a MacBook that starts up, choose the Apple menu, then About This Mac. It shows the name and year (for example “MacBook Air, M2, 2022”), the chip and the memory. Storage is listed in System Settings under General, then Storage.

The model number, if it will not start

Turn the MacBook over. In the small printed text near the hinge there is a model number beginning with “A” (for example A2337). That tells us which model family it is, even if the screen stays black.

Chip, memory and storage

Intel or Apple silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4 and their Pro and Max versions), plus memory and storage if you know them. On most recent MacBooks these are built in and cannot be upgraded, so the original specification matters.

Battery condition

If it starts, System Settings, then Battery, shows the battery health. System Information (under Hardware, then Power) also shows the cycle count. “Service Recommended” is worth mentioning.

What is wrong, in your words

What happens when you press the power button, when the problem started and anything that led up to it, such as a drop or a spill. Plain English is fine.

Working or faulty: what we may consider

These are examples of what we are happy to look at. We cannot promise an offer for every one, but a fault on its own does not rule a MacBook out.

We may consider

  • Working MacBooks with normal signs of use, such as light scratches, scuffs or a shiny keyboard.
  • A cracked or damaged screen, where the rest of the MacBook is intact.
  • MacBooks that will not turn on, will not charge or keep restarting.
  • Keyboard, trackpad or port faults.
  • A battery showing “Service Recommended” or not holding charge.
  • Liquid spills, if you tell us what was spilled and when.

Generally not suitable

  • Repairs that were not disclosed, or poor-quality repair work. Official Apple repairs, such as a battery replacement, are fine to tell us about: we assess them individually.
  • Missing parts, such as a missing bottom case, screws, keys or display, or parts that have been removed.
  • MacBooks with Activation Lock (Find My) switched on under an Apple Account you cannot sign out of.
  • Work or school MacBooks still enrolled in an organisation’s device management.
  • MacBooks reported lost or stolen, or that you are not entitled to sell.

Photos that help

  • The lid, closed, showing the top of the case.
  • Open, with the screen switched on if it works. The About This Mac window is ideal.
  • The keyboard and trackpad.
  • The underside, including the small printed text with the model number.
  • A close-up of every dent, crack or mark you mention.
  • The charger, if you are including it.

You can cover the serial number if you prefer. We do not need it at this stage.

What affects an offer

  • Model and year, and whether it has an Intel chip or Apple silicon.
  • Memory and storage, which are fixed on most recent MacBooks.
  • The condition of the screen, case and keyboard.
  • Battery health.
  • What the fault is, if there is one.
  • Whether it is complete, any repair history, and whether it comes with a charger.

If you accept an offer

Offers are valid for seven days. If you accept and your postcode is one of the selected Manchester and nearby postcodes we collect from, we arrange collection at an agreed time, at no charge. Elsewhere in the UK, we email you written instructions for posting your MacBook. When it arrives, we check it against your description and photos, agree the final price with you and pay by bank transfer. Read how the whole process works.

Before handover, back up your data, remove your accounts and any activation lock, and erase the MacBook if it still works. The preparation guide has the steps.

Selling a MacBook: questions

Will you buy a MacBook with a cracked screen?
We will consider it. A cracked screen does not rule a MacBook out, provided the rest of it is complete. If it has had any previous repairs, tell us about them. Include a clear photo of the screen switched on and switched off.
Can I sell a MacBook that is still signed in to my Apple Account?
Not while Activation Lock is on. Before a sale you will need to sign out of your Apple Account and turn off Find My. If you have forgotten your password, Apple’s account recovery can help. Our preparation guide explains the steps.
My MacBook is from work. Can I sell it?
Only if you are authorised to sell it and your organisation has released it from its device management. If you are not sure, ask your IT team before sending us details.
Do you need the original box?
No. If you have the box or charger, tick them in the form. If not, just say so.
