The widely used guide is the 50% rule: if the repair comes to more than half the price of an equivalent new machine, replacement generally makes more sense. If it is comfortably under half, repair wins.
The second number is age. A laptop under about four years old is usually well worth repairing or upgrading, because the rest of the machine has plenty of life left.
