As one year ends and another begins, I want to start with the most important thing: thank you. To everyone who chose to trust Manchester PC with their laptops and computers, your support is what has driven our growth and made the business what it is. This is a short look back at a year of progress, and a thank you to the customers at the heart of it all.

I have been fixing computers in and around Manchester for a long time now, and I still find it humbling that people hand me the machine that holds their photos, their accounts, their coursework and their work. That trust is not something I take lightly, and everything we changed and improved this year was, at heart, about being worthy of it. So before I get into the new software and the bigger workshop and the rest of it, I want you to know that none of it would mean anything without the people who keep walking through our door, or leaving their laptop ready for us to collect.

Putting customer care first

Our team has poured real effort into delivering not just satisfactory but genuinely exceptional customer care, because that commitment is what sets us apart in laptop and computer repair. As the business has grown and time has become more precious, we have leaned on smart automation to protect the personal touch that defines us, rather than letting growth dilute it.

That phrase, protect the personal touch, matters to me more than any piece of kit we bought this year. When a business grows, the easy thing is to start treating people like ticket numbers. I have been on the receiving end of that as a customer myself, and I never wanted Manchester PC to feel like that. So the question I kept asking the team was simple: does this change make us faster and clearer for the customer, or does it just make us feel busier? If it was the second one, we did not do it.

In practice, good care is mostly about honesty and communication. It is telling you the truth when a repair is not worth the money. It is explaining what is actually wrong with your laptop in plain English, without baffling you with jargon to justify a bigger bill. It is ringing you before we spend your money, not after. None of that is glamorous, but it is the difference between a one-off transaction and a customer who trusts us with the family laptop for the next ten years.

Investing in our service

We made significant investments in our bespoke job-management software, built to elevate, not just maintain, the service we offer. SMS updates now keep you seamlessly informed about the collection and return of your devices, and our quoting system, handled by seasoned, highly trained colleagues, is built for prompt, accurate responses. An AI-powered route planner helps us keep our collection and return commitments, and keeps you informed if anything changes. We also expanded our workshop, which means faster diagnostics and repairs while maintaining the standards we are known for.

Let me explain why each of those mattered, because they are not just buzzwords. The bespoke job software means that when your machine arrives with us, every step is logged against your job: the fault you reported, the diagnosis, the parts, the tests, the final checks. Nothing gets lost on a sticky note. If you ring up to ask where things are, whoever answers can see the whole story in seconds, rather than going to hunt for the person who happened to book you in.

The SMS updates came directly from customer feedback. The single most common worry people told us about was not the repair itself, it was the silence. Where is my laptop? Has anyone looked at it? Will it be ready when you said? So now you get a message when we collect, a message when the diagnosis is done and a quote is ready, and a message when your device is on its way back. It is a small thing that takes away a surprising amount of stress.

The AI route planner is the least visible change but one of the most useful. Across a busy day of free collections and returns around Manchester, traffic, roadworks and last-minute jobs can play havoc with timings. The planner reorganises the day intelligently so we keep our promises, and if your slot does shift, you hear about it from us first rather than wondering where we have got to. Expanding the workshop, finally, simply means more bench space, more dedicated diagnostic stations and less waiting in a queue, so your repair starts sooner and finishes sooner.

One highlight was being chosen by be quiet!, the distinguished German computer component manufacturer, as their exclusive service centre in the UK. Being trusted as their UK service centre is a vote of confidence in the standard of work coming out of our Manchester workshop, and it is something the whole team earned. For customers it means that if you own be quiet! kit, you no longer have to ship parts abroad and wait. You get genuine parts, expert handling and a faster, UK-based warranty process. The year in repairs: what Manchester brought to our bench

If you want to know what is really happening in the world of computers, do not read the glossy launch announcements, look at what is actually coming in for repair. Over the year, certain jobs came up again and again, and they tell a clear story about how people are using, and keeping, their machines.

Far and away the most common request was the storage upgrade, swapping an old mechanical hard drive for a solid-state drive. After that came memory upgrades, laptop screen replacements, failing fans and overheating, dying batteries, liquid damage (tea and coffee remain undefeated) and the usual run of software, virus and slowdown problems. What links almost all of them is that they are fixable. The machine is not dead, it just needs the right part or a proper clean and tune.

Common job this yearWhat it usually fixesRough turnaround
SSD upgradeSlow boot, long loading, general sluggishnessOften same day to 1 to 2 days
RAM upgradeFreezing with several tabs or apps openSame day to 1 to 2 days
Screen replacementCracked, flickering or black display1 to 3 days, subject to part
Fan or cooling serviceOverheating, loud fans, sudden shutdowns1 to 2 days
Battery replacementWill not hold charge, dies quicklySame day to 2 days

Turnarounds vary with the model and how quickly we can source the right part, so please treat the table as a guide rather than a promise. The point I want you to take from it is this: the vast majority of laptops written off as too old or not worth it are nothing of the sort. If you are not sure whether yours is worth saving, our guide on repair versus replace walks you through how to decide, and we are always happy to give you an honest opinion.

The big shift to SSDs, and why it changes everything

If there is one upgrade I wish every customer knew about, it is the move from a traditional spinning hard drive to a solid-state drive. It is, year after year, the single biggest improvement you can make to an older laptop for the least money, and the difference genuinely surprises people.

A traditional hard drive stores your data on a spinning metal platter, with a tiny arm physically moving to read and write. It works, but it is slow and it is the one major moving part left in most laptops, which makes it the part most likely to fail with age or a knock. A solid-state drive has no moving parts at all. It reads and writes electronically, which means your computer wakes up in seconds, programmes open almost instantly and that frustrating pause when everything hangs largely disappears.

The reason it feels like a brand new machine is that, for everyday use, the hard drive was almost always the bottleneck, not the processor. A perfectly capable laptop from several years ago can feel painfully slow purely because it is still running on a mechanical drive. Put an SSD in it and the same machine flies. We explain the full case, and what to expect, in our article on why you need to upgrade to an SSD. If your computer takes an age to start up or stutters when you open a few things at once, this is very often the cure, and it is one of the cheapest repairs we do.

RAM, and giving an old machine a second life

The other upgrade that punches well above its price is memory, or RAM. Where an SSD makes everything load faster, more RAM lets your computer do more at once without grinding to a halt. If your laptop slows to a crawl the moment you have a dozen browser tabs, an email programme and a video call open, you are very likely running out of memory rather than out of road.

Modern web browsers and applications are hungry, and a machine that shipped with a modest amount of RAM a few years ago can struggle with today's workload even though there is nothing wrong with it. Topping up the memory, where the model allows it, is often a quick and inexpensive job that buys you years more comfortable use. If you are not sure whether you need it, our guide on whether you need extra memory helps you work it out, and if your machine simply feels tired, start with our piece on why your laptop is running slow.

Pair an SSD with a memory top-up and you have, for a fraction of the price of a new laptop, effectively rebuilt the parts that actually limit everyday performance. That combination is the workhorse of what we do, and it is why I keep telling people not to give up on a machine just because it has slowed down.

Holding our prices, championing repair

Despite the economic pressures of recent years, the cost-of-living squeeze, inflation and rising interest rates, we kept our service fees unchanged to help ease the burden for our customers. Looking ahead, we expect more people to discover that repairing a device is a pragmatic, cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to buying new. It may surprise you that many laptops sold today do not necessarily outperform those from five or even ten years ago, some older models still hold their own, which is exactly why a repair or upgrade is so often the smart choice, as our guide on repair versus replace explains.

Holding our prices was not an easy decision, because our own costs went up like everyone else's. But I kept coming back to who our customers actually are. Most people who bring us a laptop are not looking for a luxury, they are trying to make something they already own last a bit longer because money is tight. Raising our fees in the middle of that felt like exactly the wrong thing to do. We would rather do more repairs at a fair price than fewer at a higher one, and we would always rather you spent fifty or a hundred pounds keeping a good machine going than several hundred replacing it before its time.

Repair over replacement: the e-waste case

Repairing is not only kinder to your wallet, it is genuinely kinder to the planet, and the numbers behind that are sobering. According to Material Focus, which tracks UK electrical waste, the amount of household electrical equipment placed on the UK market rose by around a quarter since 2018, yet the amount of waste electrical equipment collected for recycling barely moved over the same period, up by under one per cent. In plain terms, we are buying far more electronics than we are responsibly recycling, and the gap is widening.

That gap is exactly where repair makes a difference. Every laptop we bring back to life is one that does not go to landfill, and one that does not need to be manufactured to replace it. This is the part people often miss: the biggest environmental cost of a device is not the electricity it uses, it is the energy, water and raw materials that went into making it in the first place. Keep a machine running for two or three extra years and you spread that enormous upfront cost over a much longer life. That is why extending the life of technology has always been at the centre of what we do, and why it sits so naturally alongside our work with durable brands like be quiet!.

Right to repair: where the UK stands

You may have heard the phrase right to repair in the news, and it is worth knowing where things actually stand, because it affects you. The UK introduced right to repair rules a few years ago, but as consumer group Which? has reported, those rules are narrower than many people assume. They cover a defined list of household appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, fridges, freezers and televisions, and they crucially do not yet cover laptops, tablets or mobile phones.

Which? also points out that, even for the products that are covered, the UK rules have real gaps: there is no fixed deadline by which a manufacturer must complete a repair, and no limit on what they can charge for spare parts, whereas newer European rules go further. The EU's 2024 right to repair directive extends to more products and sets firmer obligations, which means UK consumers currently have weaker protection on this front than their neighbours.

What does that mean for you in practice? It means that for the devices most of us rely on every day, laptops and phones, your right to a sensible, affordable repair still depends largely on choosing to repair, and on having an independent workshop willing and able to do it. We have written more about the wider picture in our post on the right to repair, and it is a topic I will keep banging the drum about, because it matters.

Why supporting independent local repair matters

When you bring your laptop to a local independent like us rather than writing it off, a few good things happen at once. Your money stays in the Manchester economy. A skilled repair trade stays alive in your city, with real people who can actually open a machine and fix it rather than just sell you the next one. And a perfectly good device keeps working instead of becoming waste. None of that happens when the default answer is always to buy new.

  • You get honesty, not a sales target. We have no incentive to push you towards a new machine you do not need. If a repair is not worth it, we will tell you.
  • You keep your data and your set-up. A repair or upgrade means you are not starting from scratch, reinstalling everything and hunting for files.
  • You support real local skills. Every job keeps experienced engineers in work and keeps that knowledge in your community.
  • You reduce waste. The greenest device is very often the one you already own, kept running a little longer.

We serve customers right across Greater Manchester, and you can see the full list of areas we cover on our repair locations page. Wherever you are, the principle is the same: a good repair shop close to home is worth holding on to.

Looking ahead, and some honest advice

As we head into the new year, my advice to customers is the same advice I would give a friend. Look after the machine you have, and it will look after you. A little care goes a very long way, and most of the emergencies we see could have been softened, or avoided entirely, with a couple of simple habits.

Here is the short, honest checklist I wish everyone followed:

  • Back up your important files. This is the big one. Hardware can be replaced, your photos and documents often cannot. Keep at least one copy somewhere other than your laptop. Our guide on why backing up your data is critical explains the simplest ways to do it, and if the worst has already happened, our data recovery service can often help.
  • Keep it cool and clean. Dust kills laptops. If your fan is roaring or the machine is hot to the touch, do not ignore it. A clean and a fresh application of thermal paste can add years of life.
  • Do not drink over the keyboard. Liquid damage is one of the most common and most heartbreaking faults we see, and it is almost entirely preventable.
  • Act early. A laptop that is slowing down, getting hot or making odd noises is telling you something. Catching it early is nearly always cheaper than waiting for it to fail completely.
  • Consider an upgrade before a replacement. If your machine is just slow rather than broken, an SSD and a memory top-up will very often transform it for a fraction of the cost of new.

For more on keeping your device in good shape, our essential laptop care guide is a good place to start. And if you want to see how the year unfolded for us, our mid-year review caught the story halfway through.
